A poem about pocket money
In my day when things were cheap
you could play for hours on the street
you didn’t need many toys or stuff
a ball and skipping rope were quite enough
so when we got our pocket money
it was always spent on treats
we’d rush down the shops
and blow it all on sweets
sherbert dip dabs, love hearts,
refreshers and gum
not a care for our teeth
or getting a big round tum
I used to get 25p
on Monday’s right after tea
sometimes granny gave some extra
to my sister and me
We always loved it very much
when she came to stay
but we couldn’t spend her money on sweets
no that had to go
‘away’
(where on earth was away and what became of it???)
With my own kids, I try to make them save and set goals within their reach
as a budgeting blogger I feel I really ought to teach
BUT
They spend it as soon as they get it
on Beanos, cards and choc
top trumps, stickers and smarties
yes also straight down the shop.
They buy more toys than we did
and far less sweets these days,
but we know far more about teeth
and get all anxious about play
but pocket money unlike time
really brings little change
the urge to spend and treat ourselves
seems always to remain!
so even though they get £2
FAR more than I ever did
despite my good intentions
they still spend it like a kid.
I do hope you enjoyed my poem about pocket money. You might also like my post on should pocket money be linked to chores
That is fab!
Good luck x
Becky thats fantastic i am not poetic and would be rubbish at this but you have done a fab job 🙂
Love this Becky!
I love that they “spend it like a kid”! So true. Why save when you’re that little and you want a tiny plastic toy that will break in 30 seconds RIGHT NOW!
This is fab – and a really innovative entry into the competition :). Really well written and oh so true! Thank you for linking to Prose for Thought x

Thank you so much
It’s funny I have one who has no money in her piggy bank and another who is saving for the Death Star!
Really funny and so very true.
