Renshaw sent me some colour melts and suggested I make some cake pops using them.
I’m not a particularly experienced baker but I have seen cake pops everywhere on the Internet so I figured …..well how hard can it be?
And just look at what my son and I made:
Don’t they look gorgeousand I promise you they do taste absolutely delicious.
The colour melts were so easy to use but oh dear, I didn’t quite get the cake mixture consistency right.
Do you now want to see what happened behind the scenes….
Utter chaos.
Half the cake crumbled as soon as I put a stick in them. some kindly waited until I had popped on the colour melts and sprinkles. What a disaster.
I would post a recipe but in all honesty I used a cake mix (shocking I know!) and it was still a disaster! And the state of my kitchen was shocking.
I would recommend the colour melts though …they were fab…quick melt int he microwave, easy covering of the cake and quick setting. Brilliant. Just the actual cake that seemed to go a bit wrong!
I put my pictures on Facebook ( I am nothing if not honest) and was astounded how many people nodded in recognition of cake pop chaos.
So please answer me this food bloggers….. is it just us ordinary bloggers who have such trouble with pesky cake pops or do you just only show the intact ones and have a big pile of cakey mush too???
Oh I just love this! Brilliant that you’ve been so honest, and it did make me smile. I can vouch for the gorgeous taste of the cakepops though 😉
I am by no means a foodie, but a good tip is to dip your cake pop stick into your melted chocolate (or colour melts), slide them into your cake balls and then put them in the freezer for about 15mins. This helps the cake pops set onto the sticks. Having said that, some of mine still managed to disintegrate!
i have foudn cake pops hard ot make in the past especially when it comes to making the stick stay in! Someone told me that it was a good idea to freeze the cake pops to firm them up and add the stick but add melted chocolate first to act as a glue.
yours look pretty but i do feel (and know) your cake pop chaos x x
I’ve never tried making cake pops (Shocking, I know!), this post has made me giggle out loud Becky, thank you! Are the sprinkles veggie because the colours look fabulous and I’d love to try them?!
Oh I love this. Love love love love it. I love the behind the scenes shots The real pics. I know you are not alone in the chaos when blogging about food!
I am loving your honesty!! That is my kind of food blog post!!
I’m glad i’m not the only one that has problems with making cake pops
I’ve never had the balls to attempt cake pops: go you!!
Ha ha ha this is much like all my cakey efforts! Fair play on sharing the chaos!
Haha oh bless you!
I’ve only made them a few times but I made an extra moist cake which I think really helped (Nigella’s Guinness cake, and I made it again substituting cherry coke). Or else I think you need to add frosting to the cake crumbs so it sticks together.
I’ve heard good things about Renshaws colour melts – I struggled a bit with candy melts so I’ll have to give these a try.
Love your honesty in this post!

yes pretty sure but will check (hadnt thought!!)
Oh, I love this post – I have never actually attempted cake pops myself, as I am scared of it ending like this – but what the hell, I will give them a try now!
Awww, I’m the same with Cake Pops Becky, they are so hard to make well. I used a cake pop maker this time though and it was much easier. x
love this post!! as liz said you add frosting to the crumbled cake mix and then shove them in the fridge to stick. not that i’m an expert but my friend is and hers always look fabulous!
