Profile of a budgeting mum: Romy Melville-Evans

Hi, what’s your name?

Romy Melville-Evans

Any kids?

Yes, two, one girl (6 this June) and one boy 3 1/2

Do you work? FT/PT?

I work from home running own e-tailer selling boys fashion (www.tomdickorharry.com)

Why do you work?

I’ve been a stay at home Mum since April 2006 (when I left my full-time position working for a fashion agency), but decided that last year I needed to help boys have access to better fashion!

What are your child care arrangements?

I work only when they are both at school or nursery and in the evenings when they’re asleep.

How do you manage for money?

My husband is the sole bread-winner until tomdickorharry.com takes off!

Do you worry about money?

Sometimes – would like more disposable income.

What do you waste money on?

I don’t think I waste any money really…

Have you made any big financial changes since having kids?

Yes, we moved out of central London two years ago and now live in East Sussex.

How do you make extra cash?

I don’t

Can you share 3 top budgeting tips for other parents?

1. Menu plan for the week. Avoids loads of wastage.

2. Do babysitting share (I have a child-share agreement for every Tuesday/Thursday after nursery ends at 12:30 and we pick up our elder children from School at 3:20).

3. Shop online for groceries. I think I save many hours/petrol money not going to the supermarket. Also, think I escape buying more than I need as I do walk past  end of aisles deals and BOGOF offers as one does when in store!

Tom Dick or Harry is an online boutique selling fantastic brands from across the globe for boys aged 2-10.

Romy, the sitting share tip was really helpful, thank you! It’s something I’d have never thought of before, but I implemented it several weeks a go after reading this and has helped a lot. I save money on sitters and as a single parent this helps immensely. Me and my firends all take turns. The only problem now is that when all my friends want to go for a night out, there is always someone left behind.
