SUMMER GAMES FOR KIDS – EDUCATIONAL AND FUN

Kids all over the UK are looking forward to the end of term, but for many parents the summer holidays can be a challenge. If you’re worrying about how you’ll entertain the kids every day for six or sometimes even seven weeks, read on.

We’ve compiled a list of fun games that will keep children busy and help them learn at the same time…

1. Giant Construction Bricks

Lincabricks are the same size as real house bricks, so budding builders can build themselves life-size constructions in the garden! Playing with toy bricks has been proven to help kids’ fine-motor development, as well as improving their creativity – read more about the benefits on education.com.

2. Toca Nature app
If your kids are always asking to ‘have a go’ on the iPad, download the Toca Nature app so they can learn about environmental science while they play. Children can ‘shape’ nature by creating trees, mountains and rivers and watching how life develops in their little world.

Age range: 6 – 8
Price: £2.49
Available from: iTunes.

3. Once Upon a Time card game

story cards, SUMMER GAMES FOR KIDS
This storytelling game can be played both indoors on a rainy day, or sitting in the garden in nice weather. Players tell stories based on the cards they pick, and the idea of the game is to be as original and creative as possible. It’s a great tool to help kids practice their storytelling and how to think on their feet.

Fun Factor: 5/5 or 1/5 – depending on whether your child loves stories or not!
Age range: 8 +
Price: £17.45
Available from: Amazon

4. Futuristic Garden Botanic Gel
This game allows kids to grow their own plants in different coloured gels, and because the gel is transparent, kids can observe the seeds as they sprout and grow roots. Kids can learn about biology and enjoy a real sense of accomplishment as they watch their plants develop.

Fun Factor: 4/5
Age range: 8 +
Price: £12.00
Available from: The Science Museum

5. Seedling Great Adventure Kit
Get kids out and about with this game for young adventurers. A report from the Children’s Play Policy Forum has found that playing outdoors improves children’s happiness levels and the BBC says that kids use five times as many words when playing outside! This kit is perfect for kids who want to explore nature, and includes a compass, mirror, whistle keychain (with a real temperature gauge), an observation journal, and much more.

Fun Factor: 5/5
Age range: 5 +
Price: £20.99
Available from: John Lewis
