The story of St. David (to tell little ones)

The Story of Saint David

When the Welsh were fighting the Saxons they fought for days and the Welsh were losing.  In the heat of the battle it was difficult to tell who the enemy were. The fact that both sides wore similar clothing made it very confusing. A monk called David noticed that this was becoming problem.  He told them to put a leek in their helmets so they would know who was on their side.

Some of the soldiers thought this was a bit odd but he was a monk so they did it.  Soon every Welsh soldier was wearing a leek on his helmet and before long; the Welsh had won the battle.

David the monk died on March 1st.  After he died he was made a saint.  St. David (Dewi Sant in Welsh) is the patron saint of Wales, and March 1, is his special day. The leek is the national flower of Wales.  Welsh people all over the world proudly wear the stalk, flower or a bit of leaf from a leek plant on March 1st.The Welsh leek has a flower much like a daffodil (which is quite a bit easier to find around the world in March), so many people use daffodils instead.

    Aw, how lovely!

I was born in Chester but I’ve lived in North Wales all my life (husband was born in Nottingham but he’s lived here 7 years ago when her met me) so although I class myself as English – some people would say I’m Welsh 🙂
